WHEN SUMMER COMES takes up back to Whiskey Creek and introduces a stranger into the lives of the folks that live there. The man with everything to lose finds the woman with nothing to lose, and together they find love.
Levi is running from a terrible mistake in his past and Callie is hiding from her future. Callie is in liver failure and is dying. She wants to live out her final months as happily and normally as possible, so she is not telling anyone about her medical issues. Levi has a mysterious past and can't afford to stay in one place for too long. When Levi has an accident and is hurt, he ends up seeking help from Callie. The two discover they need each other. Callie needs someone to help around her old farm and Levi needs someone to patch up his injuries. Despite the fact that neither feels they have any hope for a future, they can't help growing closer to one another. This lack of future hope keeps Levi withdrawn, but it makes Callie want to be a little reckless.
Of course, their growing feelings for one another force each of them to stop and reevaluate their current situations. Callie realizes she has to start being honest with her friends and family and Levi realizes he has to face his past demons. When the two of them are finally able to do that they can explore their future.
A beautiful book with well-written characters and strong emotions. The romances in the Whiskey Creek books are very enjoyable, but the strength of the books is really the friendships. Each of these characters is able to deal with the struggles they face because of the support system set up by their lifelong friends. I am enjoying this series and can't wait to read the next one.
