Dead Man Living

by Carol Lynne

DEAD MAN LIVING is a brief, sweet story about opening yourself up to finding true love.

Joe Baker, SWAT team leader, is shot in the line of duty and was never the same again. All of a sudden Joe can see people's emotions and he gets flashes of people's lives who are in danger. His new abilities have basically turned him into a lonely hermit because people are fearful of what they don't understand.

Joe loses the most important person in his life, his best friend and secret crush, Brian. Joe cuts himself off from Brian after a few awkward and uncomfortable encounters. But a single vision changes everything for Joe, as it brings Joe and Brian together again to try to save a woman Joe sees being murdered.

The vision also brings Beth, the director of a domestic violence shelter, into Joe's life. Joe is immediately drawn to Beth because of her unusual aura. And when Joe has a vision that involves Beth, he is determined that he and Brian can save her. Strong emotions spark between the three of them and their lives are all changed.

For being such a short story, there was a ton of plot development. Brian and Joe's relationship, Joe and Beth's relationship, Joe's drastically changed life, and the new domestic violence case were all smoothly worked together. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the Brian, Joe and Beth relationship development. There was a jump in time with brief mention as to how the three of them acclimated themselves to one another and to their new relationship. But I was very happy for the jump in time and getting to see a glimpse of the relationship after some time has passed. This was a fast-paced, sweet story that I enjoyed reading.
