A great new book- has some hints of City of Ember, which I enjoyed.
Across the Universe- Chapters 1-32
   Summary:
We start with Amy and her parents being cryogenically frozen to be shipped to a new planet to help develop it.  They are supposed to be frozen for 300 years, the amount of time it will take the ship to get to the new planet.  We then go to Elder who is on the ship Godspeed, which was launched 250 years ago.  Elder, who is the future leader of the entire ship, lives with Eldest, the current leader of the ship.  Elder is frustrated the Eldest is keeping secrets from him and not properly training him to take over as leader.  Elder starts to uncover some of the secrets Eldest is keeping from him.  Eldest agrees to start training Elder; he begins with the three causes of discord.  Elder is assigned to study Earth history and look at the reasons there was so much discord.  Elder heads to the Recorder Hall, where history is kept.  Elder thinks about Centauri-Earth, the new planet they are headed to, and how much he doesn't know about it.  Elder talks to Orion, a Recorder, who lets some information slip about the ship.  They discuss changes that have occurred since the Plague, a major disaster that wiped out a lot of the ship's population.  Orion gives Elder some information to help him more fully explore the ship.  Elder runs into Doc who is worried about Harley, a friend of Elder's, taking his medications.  We learn Elder spent time at the Ward and still takes mental meds.  Elder makes a discovery and begins asking more questions of Doc and Eldest.  Doc and Elder respond to an alarm on the cryo level; they discover Amy's box has been unplugged.  Elder tells Amy she was unfrozen 50 years ahead of schedule, they are not on Centauri-Earth yet, and he doesn't know why she was unfrozen.  Eldest warns Elder that running the ship is more important than a girl.  Amy talks to Doc about unfreezing her parents; he says no.  Amy starts learning some of the differences between Earth and Godspeed; she doesn't like them.  Eldest makes it clear he doesn't like Amy because she is different and it is going to cause problems.  Eldest and Doc try to figure out who may have unplugged Amy.  Amy learns she is not the first cryo to be unplugged; she is worried about her parents.  Eldest continues to warn Elder that Amy is trouble because she is different.  Eldest is preparing for the Season, which is the delegated "mating" time on the ship.  Elder breaks into Eldest's room and discovers more lies and secrets.  Amy starts learning some of the workings of the ship.  Doc discovers another cryo box has been thawed; no one can figure out who is doing it or why.  Amy decides she can't heed Doc's warning about staying in the hospital, she needs to go out.  Amy runs into some trouble while she is out; an older woman, Steela, helps her.  Steela makes some comments that get Amy thinking about the people who are living on the ship.  Amy meets Orion who takes her to the Recorder Hall and shows her some stuff about Earth and the ship.  They discover problems with the ships monitoring systems when they try to discover who may have been in the cryo unit.  Eldest questions Doc about a possible suspect; Doc assures Eldest he is dead; Elder does not know who they are talking about.  Amy sees an elderly man being taken to the 4th floor of the hospital.  People in the hospital question Amy's presence and her different appearance; she meets Harley, who defends her.  Harley asks her to tell them about Earth; Eldest puts a stop to it.  Amy questions why the residents of the Ward are classified as crazy.  Elder tells Harley and Amy there is a place on the ship he can view the stars; Harley begs to see it.  Amy wants to know what is being done to find out who is messing with the cryo chambers; she doesn't want anyone touching her parents.  Amy wants to look for clues; Elder takes her and Harley to the cryo chambers.  They find something odd, but nothing that leads them anywhere.  Elder agrees to show Harley the stars if he will spend the night watching the cryo chambers.  Amy questions Elder about the ship and the people; Elder answers what questions he can but realizes he doesn't know a lot.  Amy questions the Eldest system, but Elder doesn't see any problems with it.  Amy sees a couple practically having sex in public and questions it; Elder just shrugs it off as being the Season.  Elder and Amy start to realize their attraction to one another.
