A Discovery of Witches- chapters 18-43 (the end)
   Summary:
In France Diana runs into some hostility from Matthew's mother, Ysabeau, but is welcomed by the housekeeper, Marthe.  Matthew gives Diana a tour of his house; she is enthralled by the library.  Matthew shares with Diana some of the issues Ysabeau has with witches.  Matthew shares with Diana her DNA results; they are both shocked.  Diana continues with her research using the books in Matthew's library; she is surprised by some of the books she finds.  Matthew, Ysabeau, and Marthe reminisce and Diana learns more about Matthew.  Ysabeau encourages Diana to accept and embrace her powers.  Domenico, a vampire member of the Congregation, comes to the house with a warning.  Ysabeau explains the Congregation and it's rules to Diana.  Diana starts having visions; she gets upset with Sarah for not telling her about the Congregation.  Matthew makes some decisions regarding his and Diana's relationship and tries to get her to see things his way.  Marcus calls to report trouble in Oxford; Matthew makes plans to return and make a deal for Diana's safety.  More of Diana's powers come unexpectedly to the surface; Ysabeau and Marthe help her.  Diana learns the story of Matthew becoming a vampire.  Ysabeau takes Diana riding and tries to educate her, harshly, on what it means to be a vampire.  Marthe shows Diana how to make homemade tea and encourages her to drink it every day to stay healthy.  Diana and Ysabeau discuss Matthew's father.  Diana talks to Sarah and Emily again to process some of what is happening; they compare her to her mother.  Diana makes a secret discovery while snooping in Matthew's study.  Matthew makes plans to return to France.  Ysabeau warns Matthew and Diana of the serious consequences of being together; they are willing to risk everything for each other.  Matthew offers to take steps to keep Ysabeau safe.  Matthew updates them of happenings in Oxford.  Matthew feels the Congregation is more concerned with Diana's powers and 782 then they are about the two of them being together.  Diana pushes Matthew to share more of his personality with her.  Matthew frustrates Diana by delaying their sexual relationship.  Another witch, Satu, tries to get Diana to open up about her powers.  Satu tells Diana things about Matthew that she didn't know; some of them upset Diana.  Satu also talks about Diana's parents.  Diana has visions  that help her figure out some things about her powers.  Ysabeau calls Matthew's brother, Baldwin; Matthew is mad Ysabeau has involved Baldwin.  Baldwin has negative opinions of witches that cause family conflict; he helps Matthew strategize.  Ysabeau feels Diana would be safer with Sarah and Emily; they make plans to go there.  Matthew questions Sarah on her decision to not teach Diana how to use her magic; Sarah gets defensive but says they will teach her now.  Diana learns more about her parents and the decisions they made before they died.  They explain to Matthew that Sarah's house has a mind of it's own and sometimes takes and keeps things; it also sometimes gives things to people.  The house starts giving Diana clues to her power and future.  Marcus and Miriam make plans to come to see Diana.  Diana learns of a rare talent that her father had.  Diana discovers some hidden qualities to Marthe's tea.  Sarah shares some family history with Matthew.  Miriam shares results from more tests run on Diana and shocks everyone by telling them Diana may be able to do something previously thought impossible.  Miriam shares with Diana the reason for her extreme upset over her and Matthew's relationship.  Em questions some of Matthew's past actions.  Marcus is upset about some of the things Matthew wants him to do.  Matthew informs everyone of the powerful connections he has and how many people he can get to help them if needed.  Sarah starts working on teaching Diana witchcraft; it doesn't go well.  Matthew and Diana are attacked by Juliette, an old acquaintance of Matthews.  Sarah takes drastic steps to help Matthew when he is hurt.  Matthew comes up with a plan for Diana to learn her powers.  Some surprising and unexpected visitors, Sophie and Nathaniel, show up at the house; they realize they are tied to Diana and want to help her.  Sophie and the house give Diana some things to help with Matthew's plan.  Hamish shows up to do his part with the new plan.  Everyone makes their preparations.  Matthew and Diana leave to find assistance for Diana.
