The Silver Chain

by Primula Bond

THE SILVER CHAIN is in intriguing story about unexplainable attractions and connections.

Serena Folkes is a small town girl ready to run and leave behind her everything in her past to pursue her dreams and her happiness.
When Serena gets an unexpected inheritance after the death of her foster parents she leaves her hometown, and everyone in it, to head to London to find a gallery to show her photography. While out taking pictures on Halloween night Serena encounters a mysterious man whom she is immediately attracted to. Their time together that first night is cut short, but circumstances bring them back together quickly. Serena is amazed to find out the mystery man, Gustav, is a gallery owner who is enamored with her work- and with her. Gustav is fighting some demons from a marriage gone horribly wrong and he feels that Serena is the only person who can save him. The contract Gustav asks for is unusual- in exchange for showing Serena’s work he wants her to be available to him for whatever he wants whenever he wants. Serena can’t deny the attraction and part of her is tempted, but such a contract would negate the independence she has just begun to seek.
I went back and forth quite a bit about how much I liked this book and what I wanted to rate it. I felt that the story was intriguing, especially Gustav’s mysterious ex-wife and the effects she has had on him, and the characters were enjoyable. At certain points the storytelling seemed disjointed and I was unsure where the author was going next. I felt that Serena was unique compared to other lead female characters in similar stories. And I always enjoy a story that has supporting characters that enhance the main characters and the plot- which this story has.
This was not a “can’t put it down” story for me, but I enjoyed it very much and find myself very eager to read the next book and see where this journey is headed.
