Changing Gear

by Joy Lynn Fielding

CHANGING GEAR is the journey of three men trying to figure out where they are and where they want to be in love and life.

Scott Davison has been sleeping with one of the mechanics that works for him, Hugh Taylor, for a while now. Scott and Hugh appear to have pretty strong feelings for one another, but they don't talk about them. When Scott's old friend and occasional lover, Cameron Phillips, comes to town, some strong emotions are generated among all three men. Scott is still attracted to Cameron and is interested in his suggestion to hook up, but he feels a strong connection to Hugh and doesn't want to leave him out, so he doesn't!

This was a really sweet story that explored the emotional turmoil that can be generated with three people in a relationship, none of whom openly talks about their feelings. These three men are feeling love, insecurity, jealousy, and fear, and the coping mechanism that kicks in for all of them is to run away. It seems easier for them to walk away from a potentially amazing relationship than to talk honestly about their worries and concerns. As is often the case, a tragic event occurs before anyone starts being honest with themselves and each other.

I felt the author did a fantastic job writing the multifaceted emotional components of this story. My only complaint is that I found the plot a bit rushed and forced in spots. We don't really get to know the antagonist; he just appears as an outlier to the story. I enjoyed the main characters and cared about what happened to all of them. Very good story!
